Read Chapter 1Aric sorts scrolls in the Great Library of Angren. It is the largest archive in Aurelia and, on most nights, the loneliest place in the city. He is fifteen, the son of a poor scholar whose name the city has forgotten, and paid in lamp-oil and yesterday's bread. He is also — although neither he nor anyone else knows it — the last living descendant of Aurel the First, the man who founded the federation nine centuries ago and whose line was believed to have ended in ashes.
He begins to notice something strange: marginal notes in the oldest books, in a dozen different hands across a dozen centuries, all circling the same phrase — the Crown of Light. On an errand one night he meets a quiet Ysrathi wanderer with silver eyes who presses a half-burned map into his hands and murmurs, "When the flames speak, you will hear what others forgot." Days later the city erupts. The Temple of Flesh accuses the Temple of Mind of sacrilege; riots spread; the Library itself is set alight. Trapped in the burning stacks, Aric hears a voice that is not his own, speaking from a god fractured through the Lattice of the world.
By dawn he is escaping Angren through tunnels and smuggler roads, guided east by a map that shimmers in time with his own heartbeat and by whispers of a destiny he can barely believe. Ahead lies Helikos, city of poets and painters, where the Aurelian Olympics are about to begin — and where a reluctant heir will discover that the contest his ancestor founded has become a cage designed to keep anyone like him from ever being heard.
Aelthara is an old continent with older grudges. At its heart lies Aurelia — a federation in name and a quarrel in practice — whose three rival jewels are bookish Angren, lyrical Helikos, and militant Rhomara. To the east the Crescent Dominion keeps its faith and its long memory. To the north the Dawn Kingdoms count their coin. South of the great rivers the Verdant Expanse is half-forest and half-rumour, and beyond the desert the Sunbound Lands worship a sun that has, lately, begun to answer back.
Beneath all of it run the tunnels of the Umbrith — patient, lightless, and increasingly less patient. And above all of it hangs the Equation: the half-remembered architecture by which the first builders of the world are said to have written the laws of resonance, of metal, of mind. Most temples teach that the Equation is a metaphor. A few quietly suspect it is not.
Every three years the three cities of Aurelia gather for the Aurelian Olympics — running, wrestling, recitation, and increasingly elaborate cheating — and pretend, for the duration, that they are one country. It is at the Olympics, in Book II, that the pretence finally fails.
